We can often get bogged down in day-to-day matters and for those running a business that is all too common.

We may look up a little and realise that other things are going on around us

- we have an election coming up
- are we out of recession yet or not ?
- who is going to pay for the UK’s deficit ?

We have had

- earthquakes in Haiti and now
- earthquakes in Chile and
- tsumani waves threaten the Pacific

Is there any good news - - -

But let’s think beyond that.

The British Museum, in collaboration with BBC Radio 4, has a 15 minute slot each day, for 100 days with a programme A History of the World in 100 Objects.

Neil McGregor who is the Director of the Museum has put together 100 objects which tells the history of the world; Love, war, culture, food, arts & crafts and more, all backed up with 100 wonderful objects – all of which reside in the British Museum – part of our culture.

Take 15 minutes out your day for coffee and a little light education

If you have not yet heard the broadcasts they are still available on the BBC I-player service http://www.bbc.co.uk/ahistoryoftheworld/explorerflash/#/object_sogITE3FSKStlk12qd2W3w

and can link you to the British Museum site – and – if you are up in London – well worth setting aside time to visit (it’s free!) – there is always something for everyone.

These are business related – even if the objects are over 2,000 years old. They are from Roman city of Leptis Magna in Libya – from the market place – used by self employed market traders.

1. The wine shop.
2. Punic market place. You can see serving counters – one which is quite heavily scored – wonder what they sold from here?
3. Weights and Measures. It has holes in of different sizes. Put in the plug at the bottom; fill up the relevant size hole – pull the plug and collect your goods as they trickle through
4. Measurements of length: Phoenician at the top; Roman in the middle; Greek measurement at the bottom
